Don't vote for me because I am Igbo - Peter Obi

While the Labour Party presidential flag bearer markets his candidacy to Nigerians based on what he has to offer, the candidates of APC and PDP are busy stoking ethnic and religious sentiments. Recently, Atiku Abubakar of PDP said that what the North wants is strictly a president from the North . But has he bothered to find out what the rest of Nigerians want? As far as we all know, Nigerians (including the North) want a president who will solve the myriad of problems bedeviling our nation. For me, anyone who is not discussing the economy and security is joking.

Sadly, ethnicity and religion have been the two main deciding factors in our national politics. However, an average Northerner today knows that ethnic sentiments have not done them any good. How do we explain that the North who have dominated power for more years than the South are still very much underdeveloped? Infrastructural development, a good economy, and security will benefit all irrespective of ethnic or religious affiliation. This cannot be emphasized enough.

The determining factors in the 2023 presidential election are; competence, capacity and commitment. Political will, justice, fairness and equity are also crucial. However, if Peter Obi had marketed himself on the strength of equity alone, trust me many of us won't be supporting him. Enough of ethnic and religious politics. They are retrogressive.
